If you have never been to a Mass
Nothing here commits you to anything. It is written for people who would like to come but would rather know in advance what they are walking into.
The shape of a Mass
About fifty-five minutes, in this order, every time.
- The Introductory Rites. A hymn, the sign of the cross, and a short act of penitence said together.
- The Liturgy of the Word. Two readings, a psalm, and the Gospel — everyone stands for the Gospel. Then a homily, usually about ten minutes.
- The Creed and the Bidding Prayers. Said together. Saying nothing is entirely ordinary.
- The Liturgy of the Eucharist. The gifts are brought up, the Eucharistic Prayer is said, and people kneel. If kneeling is difficult, sit — nobody minds and plenty do.
- Communion. See below if you are not a Catholic. This is the part people worry about and it is the part with the clearest answer.
- The Dismissal. A blessing, a final hymn, and tea in the hall after the 11 o'clock.
Communion, if you are not a Catholic
Holy Communion is for Catholics who are prepared to receive it. That is not a judgement about you — it is what Catholics understand the sacrament to be, and it applies to plenty of Catholics in the room on any given Sunday.
You are very welcome to come up for a blessing instead. Join the queue, cross your arms over your chest, and the priest will bless you. It happens at every Mass, nobody looks, and it is a normal thing for a visitor to do.
Or stay in your seat. That is equally normal and equally unremarkable.
Small things nobody tells you
When do I stand, sit and kneel?
Follow the row in front. If you get it wrong, so did four other people. Staying seated throughout is fine and is what many people with bad knees do.
What is the book, and do I need it?
A missalette with the readings and responses. There is a pile at the back. You do not need it, but it helps you follow.
People are doing something at the door with water.
Holy water, and the sign of the cross. Do it or don't — both are unremarkable.
What do I wear?
Whatever you arrived in. This is a village parish, not a cathedral.
