The only thing we charge for
A spiral stair, worn, uneven and narrow, to a parapet with the whole Vale of York on it. It takes about forty minutes there and back including the time everybody spends at the top not wanting to come down.
Open daily from two o'clock, last entry half past four, weather permitting. Tickets at the welcome desk — there is no online booking and there is rarely a queue.

How hard is it?
212 steps, spiral, stone, worn in the middle, with a rope handrail and no lift. There are two places to stop. If you can manage four flights of stairs without stopping you will be fine.
Is there an age limit?
Eight and over, and under-16s with an adult. There is no upper limit and the oldest person up it last year was ninety-one.
What if I am claustrophobic?
The stair is genuinely narrow and there are stretches with no window. It is not the place to find out. Ask at the desk and a steward will show you the first eight steps so you can decide.
Can I come down if I change my mind?
Yes, and about one person a day does. The stewards are used to it and your ticket is refunded.
Why is it closed today?
High wind, ice, or the bells being rung. The welcome desk knows by nine each morning and there is a sign at the foot of the stair.
